Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Bears Paw Mountains lies the small town of Big Sandy. With a population of about 750, Big Sandy is the northernmost town in Chouteau County.

Residing on Highway 87 Big Sandy is 50 miles south of the Canadian border, 35 miles south of Havre, 38 miles north of Fort Benton, 80 miles north of Great Falls, and 15 miles west of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation.

Big Sandy is a people-oriented town, offering a variety of services and supporting over 40 businesses in town and 10 more in the surrounding area. Travelers on Highway 87 are invited to stop and rest at the internationally friendly facilities of the City Park, located at the center of town. Facilities include public handicap accessible restrooms, free overnight off-highway parking, RV dump and water fill, picnic tables and playground.

History abounds in Big Sandy and the surrounding area, which can be viewed at the Big Sandy Historical Society, which, as in 1886, when it was a junction for the three supply routes from the Missouri River to Fort Assiniboine, serves as a stopping place between Fort Benton, Judith Landing, Virgelle, and Havre.

If you're in this area some time; stop, rest, and visit a while. You'll find what friendly Montana is all about.ArcView Map by Colette Terry.
